Andorran Council Awards Order of Charlemagne to Musician Daniel Areny Rossell

The Andorran Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday the awarding of the Order of Charlemagne to Daniel Areny Rossell, a musician and educator from Sant Julià de Lòria, for over 50 years promoting choral music, folk dance, Andorran popular culture, and musical education.

Born in Certés on 25 December 1939, Areny began music studies at age 11 under master Isidre Marvà and later trained at Barcelona's Conservatori del Liceu, earning teaching and piano qualifications in 1963. His early involvement included singing in the Chor de Caramelles del Centre de Cultura Lauredià and Chors Andorrans led by Josep Fontbernat.

Key achievements include founding and directing the Coral Rocafort in 1962, co-founding the Esbart Laurèdia that same year with former members of the Esbart Andorrà de Sant Julià de Lòria, and launching the Petits Cantaires Lauredians choir in 1971. He helped establish the Institut Andorrà d’Estudis Musicals, where he taught and served as head of studies from 1980 until 2004. Areny also opened Musical Andorrà shop in 1976 while balancing teaching and other work.

As a composer, he created works such as Ball dels Gegants and El ball dels Gegantons from Sant Julià de Lòria, and the sardana Dansaires andorrans. His preservation efforts involved recovering scores and manuscripts, including those by Marfany for the Coral archive, and transcribing the Ball de la Marratxa through detailed collaboration with veteran dancers to maintain its traditional form, rhythm, and measures.

The Order of Charlemagne honours individuals or organizations, Andorran or foreign, for exceptional merits or significant services to the Andorran state, in life or posthumously.
