Sant Julià de Lòria's Lauredià Centre Reopens Post-Fire with €14.5M Overhaul

Sant Julià de Lòria's Centre Cultural Lauredià reopens on 25 June after a €14-14.5 million reconstruction following the November 2022 fire, with insurers covering €7.5 million—more than half—following tough negotiations that began with early 2024 offers of €3.5 million.

Cònsol Major Cerni Cairat detailed the project's resolution during a Thursday press conference after a council meeting. He described the insurer discussions as arduous, with companies initially underestimating the extent of fire, smoke, water damage, and the building's technical demands. The parish paused talks until final costs were clear, enabling a complete overhaul rather than minimal repairs. This secured insurer funding for over half the expense, leaving the parish to cover €7-7.5 million for a facility designed to serve 30-50 years. Workers are finalising details like the pioneering LED facade, with some certifications to follow the opening. No injuries occurred during the blaze.

Cairat noted initial hopes for a March 2023 restart faded as deeper issues emerged, pushing timelines back. He praised the outcome, especially given the absence of harm.

The parish unveiled a six-day reopening programme on Wednesday, running 25-30 June under the theme “Obrim el futur a la cultura”. Cònsol Menor Sofia Cortesao described it as a landmark for the community, highlighting upgraded auditoriums with improved accessibility, comfort, magnetic loops, stage tech, and better audience-stage connections. The flagship event starts at 9pm in Auditori Claror before moving to Plaça de la Germandat for a public spectacle on the LED facade, blending lights, music, video, vertical dance, and citizen involvement. Directed by Hansel Cereza of La Fura dels Baus, it features local talent including Laia Ateca as host, with Cereza calling it a distinct creation—“seasoning the salad” as orchestra conductor—across indoor, formal, and explosive outdoor phases for enduring resonance. Nearly all production is local, with Cereza as the primary external contributor. Cortesao stressed its one-off nature, hoping attendees recall it in 30 years.

The lineup mixes free and ticketed events for all ages: Brodas Bros' family dance Petit Break on 26 June; DJ sets by Dottixx, Dydy and Tite; Minimons' immersive Un Teatre al Jardí on 27 June; Cançons menudes sessions with Gemma Baños and Marc Sumsi; musical El fil invisible on 28 June; havaneres by Les Anxovetes; and Maria del Mar Bonet's L’aigua no cansa on 27 June in Auditori Claror. Open days run 29 June from 5-9pm, closing 30 June with a live QOM Podcast recording featuring MotoGP rider Pedro Acosta in the expanded Auditori Rocafort after a 21 Ports of Andorra route.

Future plans include Andorra Lírica opera seasons, shared theatre with Andorra la Vella, children's shows, and the Pastorets' return.

Meanwhile, the parish is bolstering its public works, urban planning, and cadastre departments via new hires and restructuring, as they handle intense workloads including the parroquial urban plan review while understaffed.
