La Massana Hosts Eclipse Festival for Rare Solar Event in Andorra

La Massana parish is hosting an Eclipse Festival on 12 August to mark a partial solar eclipse visible across Andorra, an event experts say will not recur with similar conditions in the Principality for over a century. Set at Port de Cabús from 5pm to 11pm, the gathering blends guided stargazing, live performances and mountain dining under the parish's Starlight astrotourism programme.

The eclipse will unfold roughly between 7:30pm and 8:30pm, obscuring 98.7% to 98.9% of the sun's disc as viewed from Andorra. Though total darkness won't set in—owing to the sun's residual glow and proximity to sunset—astronomy guide Jordi Colell described it as an exceptional sight. He emphasised the need for certified eyewear, included in participants' welcome bags, to avoid serious eye damage from direct solar exposure.

Post-eclipse, attendees can enjoy food trucks, bar service and a covers set by El Tributo Definitivo until 11pm. The evening extends into Perseid meteor shower viewing at its annual peak—known locally as the Tears of Saint Lawrence—with guided commentary and an astrophotography session led by the Northern Valleys Photographic Association. Colell added that prime Perseid activity spans the 12th and subsequent nights.

Tourism councillor Mònica Solé unveiled the plans, noting keen demand from families. Registration launched via the Visit La Massana site, capped at 150 spots for €5 each; this covers the welcome pack with glasses and souvenirs. An optional tasting of limited-edition wine adds €25. Entry starts at Coll de la Botella from 5pm, with Port de Cabús road closed to vehicles—shuttle minibuses will transport from parking areas. Rain would shift proceedings to Arinsal's sociocultural centre, per tourism official Emma Jiménez.

Colell highlighted the occasion's uniqueness, with the next notable eclipse slated for 2028 but observable only from North Africa.
