Mossèn Antoni Elvira Bids Farewell in Final Mass at Escaldes-Engordany Parish

Mossèn Antoni Elvira led his final Mass as rector of the Escaldes-Engordany parish on Sunday, closing a two-year stint before moving to La Seu d'Urgell as vicar general of the Urgell Diocese.

The service drew a full church of parishioners, averaging 70 years old, who filled the space with organ music and song. Elvira appeared joyful from the outset, announcing it as his last in the role—a departure announced three months prior. The day's readings, by chance or design, centered on themes of adaptation and flowing smoothly into new phases, mirroring his upcoming duties at the diocese.

After the Eucharist, Mossèn Jaume Soy offered thanks, asking Elvira to keep those remaining at the parish in his thoughts. He described the community's enduring "affection and regard," assuring him that "the doors of the parish choirs will always be open." Soy presented an aquarelle painting as a gift, which left Elvira momentarily speechless.

Regaining his composure, Elvira expressed profound appreciation for the constant warm welcome he received. He singled out Soy's steady support, the pastoral council—which he called a "future challenge" for incoming rector Mossèn David Codina—and all its participants. Elvira framed his exit not as a goodbye but an "until we meet again," promising returns as a friend.

In his new position alongside Bishop Josep-Lluís Serrano, Elvira will advise on pastoral and administrative matters, coordinate parishes and priests across the diocese, oversee church activities, represent the bishop at events, and handle delegated responsibilities.

Earlier remarks to reporters highlighted the "short but intense" period, which contrasted his prior 12 years in Encamp. He credited volunteers for church upkeep, Caritas efforts, and youth programs, while praising local council support. Elvira outlined untapped potential in liturgy, maintenance, and broader youth engagement, urging ongoing collaboration.

His successor, Codina, assumes the role next Saturday. Elvira requested prayers for his transition and a hearty welcome for the new rector.
