Andorra's AR+I research institute detected seismic waves from two major earthquakes in Venezuela's coastal region on 25 June, with signals arriving at local stations 11 minutes after the main shocks and continuing for more than four hours.

The quakes, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, have caused at least 1,500 deaths. Despite the epicentres lying over 7,000 km away, the waves travelled swiftly through Earth's interior and surface at speeds above 10 km/s, according to Natàlia Gallego, a geologist and AR+I researcher.

Gallego detailed the detections in a video posted to X, showing clear recordings from three stations: two linked to the Catalan seismic network and one at Pic de Padern, part of the French Midi-Pyrénées network. The instruments captured the activity sharply, highlighting Andorra's place within these international systems.

Participation in such networks provides essential data on earthquakes and local seismic activity, Gallego said, enabling better study of quake behaviour and collective verification of global Earth movements. AR+I continues to support planetary knowledge through seismic monitoring.

Gallego presented the findings from a scientific perspective, while expressing respect and solidarity to the victims, their families, and those affected in Venezuela.
