Andorra Logs Record 23 Heatwave Days in June-July, Beating Prior Mark by Six

Andorra's FEDA meteorological station recorded 23 heatwave days between 21 June and 24 July, exceeding the previous record of 17 days from the summers of 2022 and 2023 by six days, according to data from the National Meteorological Service.

The stretch included four heatwaves—the highest number in a single summer, equal to the totals in the prior two years. This year's episodes stood out for their persistence, with extreme conditions—defined as both maximum and minimum temperatures surpassing the 98th percentile of historical records—covering 23 of the 34 days in the period.

Climate Action analysis on X noted that the FEDA station logged no heatwaves before 1988, with 2016 as the last summer free of them. Since 2017, Andorra has seen at least one each year, marking a decade of rising frequency and duration for these extreme temperature events.

Experts attribute the pattern to a prolonged anticyclonic ridge, compounded by Saharan dust incursions and smoke from major wildfires in France and Spain. The National Meteorological Service has pointed to a broader trend of intensifying heat in the Principat, driven by more frequent exceptionally high-temperature days.
