Andorra Activates Heat Prealert Amid Second Summer Heatwave

A second heatwave brings 6-7°C above-normal temperatures starting now, prompting Protecció Civil to activate teams and launch awareness campaigns focused on prevention for residents and vulnerable populations.

Key Points

  • Temperatures to exceed 33°C below 1,200m, up to 37°C in hottest spots until Thursday.
  • Protecció Civil urges hydration, light clothing, avoiding peak heat exertion.
  • Vulnerable groups like elderly, children, pets need special care.
  • High fire risk prompts bans on open fires, barbecues in central/southern areas.

Protecció Civil Andorra has activated a prealert for high temperatures following an orange alert issued by the Servei Meteorològic Nacional on Sunday. The heatwave, the second of the summer, is forecast to bring temperatures 6-7°C above seasonal norms, starting immediately and lasting at least until Thursday, with potential to extend further.

Maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 33°C below 1,200 metres, reaching up to 37°C in the warmest spots, particularly on Monday. Urban areas will see elevated overnight lows due to a lack of afternoon showers, prolonging the heat. In the north, rises will be more moderate, with highs up to 32°C at 1,500 metres. The alert focuses on central and southern parishes, where conditions will be most intense.

In response, Protecció Civil has initiated information campaigns, preactivated response teams, and preventive measures. Residents are urged to avoid strenuous physical activity and outdoor exertion during peak heat hours, stay hydrated frequently, wear light clothing, protect the head, and seek air-conditioned spaces.

Practical steps include closing windows and shutters facing the sun during the day, opening them at night, using cooling systems, staying in the coolest parts of homes, and preparing light meals. Special attention is needed for vulnerable groups: check daily on elderly or ill individuals living alone to ensure they follow advice; for infants and children, provide frequent hydration, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and use light clothing with head protection. Pet owners should offer shaded areas and constant water access.

On Saturday, Protecció Civil also issued a prealert for very high fire risk in central and southern areas, and high risk elsewhere, based on the Bombers' fire danger bulletin. This prompted wildfire prevention steps, including bans on open fires, pyrotechnics, and barbecues in designated zones. Authorities stress compliance with signage, and urge calling 112 immediately upon spotting smoke or flames.
