Andorra Records Second Tropical Night as Heatwave Intensifies
The Principality endures its second summer tropical night amid the third heatwave, with temperatures up to 8°C above average. Haze and dust will exacerbate the oppressive heat in valleys through Thursday.
Key Points
- Margineda station logged minimum of 20.1°C overnight into Tuesday.
- Orange alert for high temperatures in centre and south until Wednesday 9pm.
- Maximums to hit 35°C in Andorra la Vella Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Heatwave driven by warm African air masses, persisting through Thursday.
Andorra experienced its second tropical night of the summer overnight into Tuesday, with the Margineda weather station—operated by FEDA—recording a minimum temperature of 20.1°C that never dipped below the 20°C threshold.
The Servei Meteorològic de Andorra reports that this follows the hottest night so far ahead of Wednesday's peak during the third heatwave of the season. Expect mostly sunny conditions, extreme daytime heat, haze, and suspended dust particles, which could make valleys feel even more oppressive. High clouds may arrive in the evening, potentially slowing overnight cooling.
A weather disturbance west of the Iberian Peninsula, combined with a southwest airflow, continues to push warm African air masses northward into the Principat. Compared to seasonal averages, maximum temperatures could exceed norms by up to 8°C, and minimums by 5°C.
An orange alert for high temperatures remains in place across the centre and south until 9pm Wednesday, while the north stays under a yellow alert.
Tuesday's forecast calls for minimums of 18°C in Andorra la Vella, 12°C at 1,500m elevation, and 14°C in Pas de la Casa. Maximums are projected at 35°C in Andorra la Vella, 31°C at 1,500m, and 19°C in Pas de la Casa.
On Wednesday, minimums will rise slightly to 19°C in the capital and 16°C in Pas de la Casa, with maximums holding at 35°C and 19°C respectively. The heatwave is set to persist through Thursday.
