Rexcatering, Andorra la Vella commune’s project to redistribute surplus food from the Calones social canteen, has recovered 617 kilograms of safe meals in its first year of operation, equating to 3,085 rations.
This figure represents an average of nearly nine rations redistributed each day over the 12 months, according to details released by the commune. The initiative has also yielded environmental gains by preventing 9,131 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.
Councillor for Social Affairs, Youth and Public Space Maria Nazzaro welcomed the milestone. She noted that the project has become an effective mechanism for encouraging responsible consumption and utilising food still suitable for eating.
The meals, once inspected and packaged in line with food safety protocols, become available through a refrigerated vending machine located in the Congress Centre foyer.
Rexcatering launched through a partnership between the commune, Fundació Residuo Cero and Plataforma Aprofitem els Aliments (PAA), aiming to give kitchen leftovers from Calones a second chance rather than letting them go to waste.
