Andorra River Flows Below Average All Summer, Deficits Hit 52% in July

River flows in Andorra remained below the 2016-2025 reference period throughout the summer months, according to the 2026 Water Resources Monitoring Bulletin.

- River flows at station A403 in Borda Sabater showed anomalies of 25% below average in June, 52% in July, and 25% in August compared to 2016-2025 means.

- August recorded 2 cubic metres per second, versus 3 m³/s in August 2025 and the 10-year average; July saw 2.5 m³/s against 3.5 m³/s last year and 4.5 m³/s average; June hit 7.5 m³/s, exceeding 2025's 6 m³/s but below the 11.5 m³/s norm.

- Early 2026 flows were slightly above average until May, then dropped below normal from June onward.

- AR+I researcher Oriol Travesset described August's 25% shortfall as non-alarming, citing lower historical levels, but warned of potential water shortages into autumn without timely rains.

Data from the A403 station at Borda Sabater indicate that summer river discharges consistently fell short of expectations. The bulletin highlights a shift from positive anomalies in the year's first months—where flows exceeded norms slightly—to deficits starting in June.

Travesset noted that June and July marked the most pronounced drops, with August levels recovering somewhat but still lagging. He emphasised that current figures do not signal crisis, as past years have seen even drier conditions at this stage.

Attention now turns to coming weeks. The researcher cautioned that late summer and early autumn could strain water availability, particularly if autumn rains fail to materialise. Low flows might persist through September and into October, depending on precipitation patterns.
