Key Points

  • Snow fell overnight at Coll Blanc in Pas de la Casa, at 2,540 metres, with the temperature at 0.1°C.
  • Grandvalira webcams and cameras at Coll Blanc and Ordino Arcalís captured the first flakes of the season.
  • The Servei Meteorològic said the snow line dropped at times to 2,200 metres during the Adam disturbance.
  • Forecasts see no significant snowfall in the second half of October, though a new episode is possible around 26-27 October.

Pas de la Casa recorded its first light dusting of snow of the season on Sunday, 18 October, with flakes falling overnight at the Coll Blanc area at 2,540 metres, where the temperature stood at 0.1 degrees Celsius.

Grandvalira's webcams captured the first flakes, while cameras at Coll Blanc and Ordino Arcalís also showed snow falling on a day marked by precipitation and falling temperatures. According to the Servei Meteorològic d'Andorra, the snow line dropped at times to 2,200 metres, and the isolated disturbance Adam brought precipitation and an autumnal atmosphere across the country.

Snow appeared for the first time this season at points above 2,500 metres, including Coll Blanc and the Arcalís ski resort in Ordino, where videos shared by the resorts on social media showed snow reaching roughly three fingers deep in places.

The meteorological service forecast that precipitation would persist through the morning before weakening in the afternoon, with the snow line rising to 2,700 metres overnight, where further snowfall was expected. Precipitation was expected to continue on Monday, 19 October, while the outlook for Tuesday, 20 October remained highly uncertain.

Despite the early appearance of snow, forecasts did not anticipate significant snowfall during the second half of October. Snow levels were described as high for the time of year, generally around 2,600 metres in the coming days and possibly reaching 3,500 metres by the end of the month. Precipitation was expected to fade toward the end of the week, with temperatures staying at similar levels.

Forecasts pointed to scarce precipitation for the rest of October, with the possibility of a new episode around 26 and 27 October, when the snow line could sit near 4,000 metres — a level that would make snowfall difficult at the altitudes usually used by ski resorts.
