Andorra la Vella POUP Protects Central Park as Permanent Public Green Space

Andorra la Vella's new Parish Planning and Urban Development Plan (POUP) will safeguard the entire Central Park, ensuring its preservation as a public green space. The finalized document, set for public consultation at the end of this month, fully protects the current 18,000-square-metre area and mandates its transfer to communal ownership once a detailed partial plan for the zone is implemented.

Comú leader Sergi González emphasized that protecting the park has been a core priority throughout the plan's preparation. He told reporters the parish could not risk losing what he called its "main lung" and a key green space for the whole country amid ongoing urban development pressures.

The land is currently privately owned, with the comú covering an annual rental cost of around €1.5 million. Ownership will shift to the parish only as part of future zoning execution, meaning no immediate changes. González noted this move will eventually eliminate the lease expense while securing the park's future. "The key is to ensure Central Park remains a green public area for generations to come, even if the effects materialize later," he said.

This commitment aligns with broader POUP goals to limit expansion, ease building pressures, and strengthen public spaces. The plan underscores the parish's focus on sustainable urban growth without sacrificing vital recreational areas.
