Andorra Approves Full Public Funding for Five High-Cost Drugs Including Parkinson's Treatment
Andorran authorities have updated CASS regulations to fully fund five expensive medications for rare and chronic conditions. Costs vary widely based on patient needs, supporting access to advanced therapies.
Key Points
- Tiopronina covers severe homozygous cystinuria; anidulafungina treats invasive candidiasis.
- Seladelpar for primary biliary cholangitis; foslevodopa/foscarbidopa for advanced Parkinson's.
- Annual costs range from 9,555 to over 69,000 euros per patient.
- Omalizumab prescription rights extended to allergology specialists for asthma and urticaria.
The Andorran government has approved changes to the regulations governing public funding for high-complexity medications, adding five new drugs that will now be fully covered by the Caixa Andorrana de Seguretat Social (CASS).
The updated rules incorporate tiopronina for treating severe homozygous cystinuria, a hereditary recessive condition affecting urine. Anidulafungina will cover invasive candidiasis in patients with severe systemic mycoses. Seladelpar targets primary biliary cholangitis, while foslevodopa/foscarbidopa addresses advanced-stage Parkinson's disease.
Annual costs for these treatments range from 9,555 euros to more than 69,000 euros, depending on the drug and each patient's therapeutic needs, according to government data.
The changes also extend prescription rights for omalizumab to allergology specialists. Previously, only pulmonology, paediatrics, dermatology and internal medicine services could prescribe it. Omalizumab treats severe persistent allergic asthma and spontaneous chronic urticaria.
This update aligns with ongoing efforts to match regulations to evolving patient needs and therapeutic advances.
