A 51-year-old motorcyclist from Ordino has died in hospital following a serious collision on the N-145 road near La Seu d'Urgell.
The victim, originally from Barcelona and a resident of Andorra for several years, suffered critical injuries in the crash on Sunday evening and passed away early Monday at La Seu d'Urgell Hospital. He was the driver of a BMW K1600 GT heading towards Andorra when it collided head-on with an Abarth car, also Andorran-registered, travelling in the opposite direction.
The incident occurred around 7:15pm at kilometre marker 0.3 to 0.7, shortly after the roundabout exiting La Seu d'Urgell—a busy stretch for weekend traffic into the Principat. The collision was particularly violent, leaving the motorcycle almost severed in two and causing significant damage to the car. No skid marks were found at the scene, prompting investigators to consider a possible medical episode suffered by the rider just before impact. An autopsy is expected to confirm the cause, with police noting his reputation as a cautious driver.
The five occupants of the Abarth escaped unharmed, despite the severe shock and material damage. Emergency services responded swiftly, including Mossos d'Esquadra patrols (up to four reported), two units from Bombers de la Generalitat, and Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) resources comprising a ground ambulance and a medicalised helicopter—though the victim could not be stabilised for air transfer to Hospital de la Vall d'Hebron as initially planned.
The road was closed in both directions, causing lengthy tailbacks during peak evening return traffic. An alternative route opened over an hour later, with full clearance by 9:45pm.
Mossos d'Esquadra are leading the inquiry into the exact circumstances. The victim, a married father of two young children with a legal background and role at an Andorran digital components firm, is due to be farewelled in Barcelona on Thursday.
This death raises the toll to 61 on Catalan roads this year, including 28 motorcyclists.
