Andorra's Breast Pathology Unit Performs 35 Procedures in First Half of 2025

Andorra's SAAS breast pathology unit carried out 35 procedures on 34 patients during the first six months of 2026, Dr Martín Espinosa, a specialist in gynaecology and breast pathology surgery, told the Andorran News Agency (ANA).

The unit, which began operating at the start of 2026, has delivered highly satisfactory outcomes, Espinosa said. SAAS data shared with ANA show the highest activity in April and June, with eight procedures each month, followed by seven in January and five in March.

This first-half figure nears the full-year total of 43 interventions on 38 patients completed in 2025. SAAS explained that last year's activity was limited by regulations on healthcare professionals, which restricted Espinosa's time in Andorra. Cases requiring his involvement were then referred to Barcelona. A subsequent regulatory change has allowed a substantial increase in his on-site presence this year.

The procedures cover both benign and malignant cases. SAAS highlighted the unit's strong public uptake and its role in providing specialised local care.

Patients no longer need to travel to Barcelona hospitals and receive treatment from an expert of recognised prestige and high technical skill, the health service noted. The initiative represents a key strategic investment for Andorra's healthcare system, while generating significant savings for the Caixa Andorrana de Seguretat Social (CASS) by reducing referrals abroad.
