Andorra's SAAS Breast Pathology Unit Carries Out 35 Breast Tumour Operations in First Half of 2026
Andorra's SAAS breast pathology unit has performed 35 operations on 34 patients for breast tumours from January to June 2026, according to Dr Martín Espinosa, the gynaecology and breast pathology surgery specialist in charge.
This total, reported by the Andorran News Agency (ANA) and Diari d'Andorra, approaches the 43 procedures completed across the whole of 2025. The unit started operations at the beginning of 2026 and has seen peak activity in April and June with eight cases each, alongside seven in January and five in March, based on SAAS figures shared with ANA.
In 2025, activity remained constrained by rules limiting healthcare professionals' time in the principality, with complex cases sent to Barcelona. A later adjustment to those regulations has enabled Espinosa to spend far more time on site, boosting local capacity.
SAAS described the results as highly positive, covering both benign and malignant conditions. Demand from the public has been robust, allowing patients to access expert care locally rather than travelling to hospitals in Barcelona.
The service praised Espinosa's established reputation and technical expertise. It forms a vital part of Andorra's health strategy, while cutting referral costs for the Caixa Andorrana de Seguretat Social (CASS).
