Andorra's Public Psychology Service Hits 3,100 Users in Under 3 Years

Launched in 2023 by the Ministry of Health and Copsia, the outpatient service has seen steady growth, averaging eight sessions per patient and focusing on youth and women to enhance prevention and resource efficiency.

Key Points

  • Service launched October 2023, limited to 10 sessions per patient, extendable by 5 annually.
  • 65% of patients are women; 24% are children/adolescents aged 0-17.
  • 12 psychologists under CASS contracts; average 8 sessions per user.
  • Minister praises uptake for addressing mental health needs and early intervention.

Andorra's public outpatient psychology service has now served 3,147 patients since its launch in October 2023, with a total of 24,846 visits completed.

The service, added to the CASS health portfolio by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Copsia professional psychology college, limits publicly funded consultations to 10 sessions per patient. This can extend once annually by five sessions in exceptional cases. The figures reflect an average of nearly eight sessions per user.

Women make up 65% of those served, while children and adolescents aged 0 to 17 represent the largest group at 24%. About a dozen psychologists hold CASS contracts to deliver the care.

Health Minister Helena Mas has praised the consistent uptake, stating it addresses mental health challenges, promotes emotional well-being, and supports early detection and intervention. The initiative aims for person-centered treatment, a stronger preventive focus across the health system, and more efficient use of resources.

Ministry officials have noted the growth underscores demand for accessible mental health support, shifting it from a financial barrier to a public resource. Recent commentary described the milestone as proof of unmet needs, calling for sustained quality and availability to build on this foundation.
