Spain Recalls Six Eclipse Glasses Brands Over Eye Injury Risks

Spanish consumer protection authorities have recalled six models of eclipse glasses from brands ECP Eye Care Professional, Homenaje, Lionstar, Opticalia, Orro and Pelispan after detecting safety shortcomings that risk serious eye damage.

The items, listed on Spain's national alert system for non-food hazards under the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, do not comply with ISO 12312-2:2015 standards. They also omit critical information like expiration dates and UV protection levels. Authorities have removed nearly 100 units from shelves nationwide.

A key issue is overly dark filters that obscure all vision, making it hard for users to find the sun. This might prompt people to take off the glasses mid-eclipse, leaving retinas vulnerable to intense solar rays and possible burns.

The recall precedes a solar eclipse visible across parts of Europe by two days. Officials stress that uncertified products form only a minor share of options on sale and urge buyers to verify safety markings prior to viewing.

Consumer group FACUA-Consumidors en Acció has flagged risks with other recently marketed glasses.

Those holding affected models must stop using them immediately and follow local guidance to return or dispose of the products. Complete lists are available on the national consumer alert site.
