TP Unitas Demolishes Historic Pensió Garcia in Andorra la Vella for New Apartment Block

Construction firm TP Unitas has completed the demolition of the historic Pensió Garcia on Avinguda Príncep Benlloch in Andorra la Vella, paving the way for a new apartment block on the site.

The modest, family-run guesthouse operated for decades, peaking during Andorra's tourism and economic expansion from the 1960s to the 1990s. It offered affordable, basic rooms to seasonal workers, traders, and budget visitors, while doubling as a social space for community gatherings and support. As the sector modernized with hotels and higher-end tourist apartments, such traditional pensions declined. The Pensió Garcia fell into disrepair, its aging facilities unable to meet contemporary standards.

In its later years, before closing, the building provided temporary shelter for people in need, including those referred by the Afers Socials department—much like other similar establishments still in use. Without heritage listing, its significance lay in social history and shared memory rather than architecture.

The clearance, finished in recent days by TP Unitas (also known as Treballs Públics Unitas), aligns with Andorra la Vella's urban renewal along key central streets. Older, unprotected structures there frequently make room for residential or commercial projects. Work on the new housing block will start once the site is fully prepared.
