Drunk Driver Charged After 4-Car Crash Injures Four Near Andorra Roundabout

Police charged an Andorran driver for a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles after he registered over 2g/l blood alcohol. Four others suffered minor injuries, and traffic halted for hours on key roads.

Key Points

  • Crash occurred Friday 4pm on Avinguda Salou near Prat Salit, triggered by detained driver's maneuver.
  • Driver tested 2.04g/l blood alcohol, highest among four; held overnight, license withdrawn.
  • Four minor injuries: 27yo male driver, 36yo female driver, 45yo driver, 33yo passenger; all discharged same day.
  • CG-1 closed temporarily, causing 2-hour delays across central Andorra.

A driver involved in a multiple-vehicle collision near Prat Salit roundabout in Andorra la Vella has been released with charges after testing positive for high blood alcohol levels.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon around 4pm on Avinguda Salou, near the Viena establishment, involving four Andorran-registered cars. Police investigations indicate a manoeuvre by the detained driver's vehicle triggered the chain reaction crash. None of the occupants in his car sustained injuries, but it led to four people hurt in the other vehicles: a 27-year-old male driver, a 36-year-old female driver, and two women aged 45 and 33—one a driver and the other a passenger. All injuries were minor, including bruises and whiplash, with victims treated on site, taken to hospital for checks, and discharged the same day.

The driver, the only one of the four to fail a breathalyser test, registered over 2g of alcohol per litre of blood—one source specified 2.04g/l. He spent Friday night in police custody before appearing before the batlle on Saturday. Due to the elevated reading, authorities opted against a quick conviction, instead processing him formally and imposing the precautionary withdrawal of his driving licence. He faces charges including a public safety offence and likely others related to physical harm from the injuries caused.

The crash forced a temporary closure of the CG-1 in both directions, causing major traffic disruptions across central Andorra. Congestion stretched from Margineda past the KM0 roundabout, with hold-ups on Avinguda Salou, Carrer de l’Obac, Avinguda Riberaygua and Avinguda Nacions Unides. Delays lasted up to two hours, though circulation resumed by around 6pm. Fire services deployed four units, including two ambulances and an extrication truck, though no extrication was needed after a door was found jammed.

Police continue investigating the exact circumstances. All involved parties are Andorran residents.
