Atlantic Front Dumps Up to 9cm Snow on Andorra's Envalira, Temps Plunge

An Atlantic weather front brought fresh snow to Andorra's high-altitude areas, with accumulations reaching up to nine centimetres at Envalira's antennas. The event, which began overnight into Thursday and continued through the morning, also caused a sharp drop in temperatures across the country.

According to the Meteorological Service, the heaviest snowfall hit Envalira, while lighter amounts included four centimetres at Sorteny, three centimetres at Tossa d'Espiolets, two centimetres in Feda's Riu Valley, and one centimetre each at Perafita and Coll Pa. Snow levels started around 2,000 metres but fell as low as 1,800 metres in places, with the snow line expected to drop further to 1,500 metres on Friday.

The front restored wintry conditions after a period of milder weather, particularly in northern parishes and Pas de la Casa, where cold winds intensified the chill. Despite the snow, which fell moderately at times, no major disruptions occurred on roads.

Friday will see persistent low cloud and weak, intermittent snow in the north, turning more continuous overnight and potentially adding to snow depths at mid-mountain levels. Southern areas and lower elevations will experience clearer skies and sunshine during the morning, though cooler air will affect the entire country.

Maximum temperatures are forecast not to exceed 13°C in Andorra la Vella, 10°C at 1,500 metres, and -3°C at Pas de la Casa. A yellow alert remains active for strong winds starting Friday afternoon, with gusts up to 40 km/h in valley bottoms and higher speeds at elevation.
