Andorra Firefighters Equip Helicopter with RECCO Detector for Mountain Rescues

The airborne device detects reflectors in mountaineering gear, improving coordination between air and ground teams in rugged terrain amid rising seasonal demands.

Key Points

  • Andorra firefighters equip helicopter with RECCO detector for mountain rescues.
  • Device detects reflectors in mountaineering gear, aiding location in rugged terrain.
  • Improves coordination between air and ground teams.
  • Demand rises in winter avalanches and summer hiking season.

Andorra's firefighters have added an airborne RECCO detector to their helicopter, enhancing search capabilities for people lost in mountain environments. The Mountain Rescue Group (GRM) now pairs this helicopter-mounted device—known as a "campana detectora RECCO®"—with existing handheld detectors used by ground teams.

The technology spots reflectors commonly found in mountaineering clothing and gear, enabling faster location of individuals in expansive, rugged, or inaccessible areas. Fire service representatives noted that it bolsters coordination between aerial and terrestrial units, marking a key advance in operational efficiency amid Andorra's demanding terrain.

The GRM, among the department's best-equipped teams, conducts numerous missions throughout the year. Demand surges in winter from avalanche risks and in summer alongside rising hiker numbers. Continuous upgrades to protocols, staff training, and technical tools remain vital for strong responses, officials said.

Fire service statements underscored the detector's value in air-supported operations, helping ensure effective rescues in complex settings.
