Hiker Dies in 100-Metre Fall at Port de Medacorba Near Andorran Border

A hiker died on Saturday after falling around 100 metres at Port de Medacorba in the municipality of Alins, Pallars Sobirà, an area of high mountain terrain near the Andorran border.
The Generalitat Firefighters received the alert at 3.01pm reporting the fall in this remote sector. Specialist teams from the Grup d’Actuacions Especials (GRAE), supported by a rescue helicopter from the Aerial Resources Unit, reached the scene to carry out the operation.
Emergency personnel located the victim but found injuries from the fall incompatible with life and could not save them. At the same time, firefighters used the helicopter to evacuate the two people who had raised the alarm, transferring them to a safe location.
The Mossos d’Esquadra took charge of identifying the victim and conducting inquiries into the circumstances of the accident.
Port de Medacorba is a spot often visited by hikers and mountaineers following routes close to the Andorran border.
