Andorra Fire Service Declines Deployment to French Wildfires Over Resource Limits

Andorra's fire service has declined to send personnel to major wildfires near Bordeaux in France, arguing that a small team would lack logistical independence and burden rather than aid larger operations.

Jordi Farré, director of the Andorran fire corps, explained that deploying four or five firefighters into complex French setups would involve mismatched communication systems and insufficient self-sufficiency in areas like supplies. "Providing help, for example, to Bordeaux with the capacity we have might create a problem rather than a solution for them," he said during the opening of a new fire station square.

The corps instead prioritizes border-area support to release neighboring teams for major blazes. Farré described these efforts as less public-facing but far more effective forms of collaboration. Recent instances include containing a mountainside fire in Ariège with aerial and ground units, two days of aid at Vall Ferrera, and coverage for Urgell crews during a Tàrrega incident—all coordinated from Andorran territory.

This approach comes amid heightened local risks. Civil Protection issued a pre-alert until next Wednesday due to high temperatures flagged by the meteorological service. The fire risk bulletin raised the southern and central zones to level 2, deemed very high. The fifth heatwave of the season began today, a first in one summer. As a result, Sant Julià de Lòria canceled its fireworks castle scheduled for yesterday to close its Major Festival, while Escaldes proceeded with Sunday's display under level 1 conditions.

In nearby Catalonia, firefighters extinguished an agricultural vegetation fire in La Seu d'Urgell yesterday morning. Declared Monday at 13:51, it burned stubble fields, produced heavy smoke visible from multiple towns, and required six ground units. Extinction efforts progressed favorably by late Monday afternoon despite ongoing flames. Catalonia maintained level 3 fire risk out of 5, with its Civil Protection plan on alert for extreme conditions expected to worsen with incoming heat.
