Andorran teaching pioneer Cuca Diumenjó dies at 59 from anaphylactic shock

The Andorran education community continues to mourn the death of Maria Roser Diumenjó Nel·lo, known as Cuca, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 59 from an anaphylactic shock triggered by medication, leading to cardiac failure.

A pioneer among teaching assistants, Diumenjó began her career in 1985 at the age of 18 at the Andorran school in Escaldes-Engordany, where she worked for decades, particularly in physical education. She supported teaching teams across various schools, earning recognition for her energy, commitment, and involvement in projects. Former director Meritxell Massoni, who worked with her for 30 years before Diumenjó moved to the Ordino primary school two years ago, described their bond as a close friendship rather than a professional hierarchy. "She was more than an assistant; she provided great support," Massoni said, noting Diumenjó's strong rapport with students. "No child who passed through the school didn't know her," she added, praising her empathy, intuition, and enthusiasm despite lacking formal training in psychology or pedagogy.

Teresa Cairat, another former director of the Escaldes-Engordany school, highlighted Diumenjó's widespread esteem among education staff and her cheerful, hardworking spirit in improving daily school life.

Diumenjó, from a large Escaldes family, served as a non-teaching staff representative on the Ordino school board. She had recently joined the Concòrdia party amid national concerns and was unmarried without children.

The family will receive condolences today from 9am to 10:30am at the wake rooms in the Escaldes-Engordany parish. A funeral mass follows at 11am at Sant Pere Màrtir church.
