A 33-year-old Andorran construction worker injured on Tuesday in El Tarter remains stable in intensive care at Nostra Senyora de Meritxell hospital after a large wooden plank struck his legs.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on the fifth floor of a residential building in central El Tarter, Canillo parish. The worker, manoeuvring a plank roughly 10 metres long, sustained injuries that pinned his lower body up to his hips. Colleagues offered immediate assistance and alerted emergency services.
Firefighters from the Canillo station, a police patrol, labour inspectors, and investigators attended the scene. They removed the timber to release him, while Servei d'Urgències Mèdiques provided on-site care before transferring him to hospital. He remained conscious during the process.
Hospital officials have confirmed his stable condition in the ICU, with multiple fractures to his legs. Further tests determined the extent of his injuries after initial assessments suggested they were minor. No details have emerged on his discharge or return to work.
Police and labour authorities continue to investigate the causes, including potential safety lapses. The site lies near a project facing disputes between investors, developers, and the property delegate.
The event highlights persistent safety issues in Andorra's construction sector, which recorded 732 workplace accidents last year according to Caixa Andorrana de Seguretat Social data—the highest of any industry, though down from prior years.
