Andorra Leaders Meet Vatican to Discuss Abortion Decriminalization

Andorra's head of government, Xavier Espot, and Institutional Relations Minister Ladislau Baró met on Wednesday with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, to further dialogue on decriminalizing voluntary pregnancy interruption while aligning with the principality's institutional framework.

The encounter, held at the Vatican, forms part of ongoing regular contacts between Andorran officials and the Holy See aimed at finding a compatible solution. Before the meeting, the executive informed the episcopal co-prince about the planned discussions and the status of previous efforts.

The delegations reviewed several legal options put forward by Andorra's government. They agreed on the need to examine these proposals in greater depth and reaffirmed their shared commitment to fluid, constructive dialogue over the coming months. The government's goal is to advance a plan that ensures institutional stability alongside real progress on women's rights.

Both sides praised the atmosphere of trust and discretion surrounding the process, given the legal, institutional, and social complexities involved. Espot used the occasion to invite Pope Leo XIV to visit Andorra.
