Andorra MoraBanc Clàssica Adds Visma-Lease a Bike, Five WorldTour Teams for 2025
Organisers unveiled five WorldTour teams for the June 21 race's second edition, including Visma-Lease a Bike joining Lidl-Trek's Tour de France squad for a key pre-TdF test. The 125km mountainous route adds gravel and draws global TV coverage.
Key Points
- Race on June 21 covers 125km with 3,780m elevation, ends at Coll de la Botella.
- Features Visma-Lease a Bike, Lidl-Trek, Movistar, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ plus ProTeams.
- New gravel at Les Pardines via Engolasters for UCI safety; broadcast on HBO Max/Eurosport in 70 countries.
- Public 10km Crono de la Clàssica time trial from Erts; Lidl-Trek eyes UCI 1.Pro upgrade.
The Andorra MoraBanc Clàssica will feature five WorldTour teams for its second edition, with Visma-Lease a Bike as the standout addition, organisers announced at a presentation on Monday.
The race is set for Sunday, June 21, starting from Plaça del Poble in Andorra la Vella at noon, following team presentations around 10:30am. The 125km route through all seven parishes includes 3,780m of positive elevation gain and finishes at Coll de la Botella. Changes this year involve a gravel section at Les Pardines, now routed via Engolasters for safety as advised by the UCI, and road closures in phases as riders pass.
Carlos Verona, the resident cyclist from Lidl-Trek and a key organiser, highlighted the event's growth. He said the team will concentrate in Andorra after the Critérium du Dauphiné, with much of its Tour de France squad competing here as a final mountain test before the French Grand Tour, scheduled 13-15 days later. Verona aims to propose an upgrade to UCI 1.Pro category next year, citing needs for higher prizes, team fees and licences. "It's mainly a matter of licences and finances," he noted, adding long-term ambitions to reach WorldTour status, where top teams must participate.
The five WorldTour entries—Visma-Lease a Bike, Lidl-Trek, Movistar Team, EF Education-EasyPost and Groupama-FDJ—join 11-12 ProTeam outfits, including Tour de France participants Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, Cofidis and TotalEnergies, plus two Continental teams and the Andorra and Spain U23 national selections.
Broadcast coverage expands internationally via HBO Max/Eurosport in 70 countries, France TV, Teledeporte (subject to Spain's World Cup schedule), TV3, ETB and RTVA.
Tourism and Commerce Minister Jordi Torres praised the race's role in promoting Andorra as a cycling hub. "It's gradually finding its place in the professional calendar and helps project our name beyond our borders," he said, linking it to efforts like desesasonalising tourism.
A new highlight is the Crono de la Clàssica by Totem, a 10km public time trial from Erts to Coll de la Botella, where amateurs can chase last year's pro benchmark of 26 minutes 38 seconds set by Mattias Skjelmose. Plaça del Poble will host family activities beforehand.
