Andorran skier Joan Verdú has begun a rigorous pre-season training camp in New Zealand with his team, including new head coach Natko Zrnčić-Dim, focusing on intensive sessions ahead of the World Cup opener.

The 24-year-old, representing the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE) and VAN DEER–Red Bull Sports, recently completed an initial training block at Roundhill. He progressed from free skiing to giant slalom and super-G on well-groomed slopes, reporting excellent conditions and a positive atmosphere. Verdú highlighted the value of resuming super-G after a lengthy hiatus, as it strengthens his giant slalom technique.

The group arrived on 11 August for a programme running until 15 September, with plans to train alongside the Norwegian World Cup team. Following Roundhill—where efforts centred on foundational work with increasing intensity through 30 August—the team will shift to Ohau around 10 or 11 September for race simulation on a prepared course. The camp will conclude at Coronet Peak with technical drills on shorter runs.

“We’re in New Zealand training hard with very good conditions,” Verdú said. “We started with some super-G, which I hadn’t done in a long time and helps my giant slalom work. We have five weeks of very tough and demanding training ahead, as this block is the most important part of pre-season.”

The effort aims to build a solid base for the World Cup giant slalom season, which begins 24 October in Sölden, Austria. Verdú plans to return to Europe for final physical conditioning and skiing in Andorra and the Alps.
