Andorran Skier Carla Mijares Wins SAC Slalom Title in Argentina

Carla Mijares clinched the South American Cup (SAC) slalom season title despite failing to complete the first run of the final event in Bariloche, Argentina, on Friday.

The Andorran Ski Federation (FAE) skier had already secured the championship mathematically on Thursday with 245 points from prior races, including her victory in the previous day's slalom. Although she did not finish the women's race—won by Germany's Jessica Hilzinger ahead of Argentina's Francesca Baruzzi and Britain's Giselle Gorringe—Mijares ended the season atop the general classification with 240 points.

In the men's slalom that day, Andorran athletes posted strong results in a race claimed by Japan's Shiro Aihara in 1:28.59. Xavi Cornella finished fifth in 1:30.44, 1.85 seconds behind, after posting the seventh-best first-run time and ninth in the second. Bartumeu Gabriel took seventh in 1:30.57, 1.98 seconds off the winner, with fifth in the opening run and 16th in the second. Jan de Visa placed 18th in 1:35.64, while Max Black-Roca and Maià Font did not finish the second run, and Àlvar Calvo was eliminated in the first.

Earlier Thursday slalom results had seen Mijares win in 1:31.80 for 19.06 FIS points, improving on her prior 31.06 mark, ahead of Hilzinger and Switzerland's Nicole Good. That day, Cornella was fifth in 1:28.32 and Gabriel eighth with 28.31 FIS points, bettering his previous 30.45.

The Bariloche competition continues Saturday with an SAC giant slalom and a FIS giant slalom on Sunday, featuring Gabriel, Calvo, Font, Black-Roca, and de Visa.
