Key Points

  • Edgar González, 28, to end Hajduk Split loan and join FC Andorra for defensive depth.
  • González brings La Liga experience from Espanyol youth, Betis, and Almería.
  • Club fined €9,000 for Piqué's 'whistling against little teams' comment to referee.
  • Third similar sanction this season; RFEF warns of harsher penalties for repeats.

FC Andorra is close to securing Catalan centre-back Edgar González on loan from Almería to strengthen its defence during the winter transfer window, which opens on 2 January.

The 28-year-old from Sallent, standing at 1.92 metres and known as Edgar in football circles, is set to terminate his current loan at Croatian club Hajduk Split, where he has featured minimally with just 391 minutes in six league games and 210 in two cup matches this season. Almería, who signed him for €4.5 million in summer 2023, also do not count on him under manager Joan Francesc Ferrer, known as Rubi. Croatian and Almería media report that González has agreed to the move, likely arriving in Andorra on loan to provide a left-footed option at the back under coach Carles Manso.

The signing addresses defensive instability, with Sergio Molina recently partnering the reliable Gaël Alonso, while Marc Bombardó and Diego Alende have struggled to cement places. González offers top-flight experience, having progressed through Espanyol's youth system—where his father, striker Lluís González, once played—before spells at Cornellà, Betis B, and a breakthrough with Betis' first team under Manuel Pellegrini. He then joined Almería for one La Liga campaign and two in the second division.

Separately, FC Andorra has received a €9,000 fine from the RFEF disciplinary committee for actions by majority shareholder Gerard Piqué during last Saturday's halftime against Deportivo de La Coruña in Encamp. Referee Edgar Mallo noted in his report that Piqué, while being restrained by club staff, told him "how easy it is to whistle against the little teams." The sanction, under article 114 of the Spanish federative regulations for passive repression of intolerant conduct, marks the club's third similar penalty this season—following incidents in matchdays 6 and 8. The RFEF has warned of harsher measures for repeat offences, including suspensions of one to two years or at least four games, stadium closures, or three-point deductions. Regulations limit locker-room access to authorised personnel only.
