Severe Traffic Jams Hit Andorra's Riu Runer Border to Spain During Easter Holiday Rush

Traffic jams are plaguing Andorra's main exit route to Spain at the Riu Runer border crossing during the extended Easter Monday weekend and the start of school holidays for Pentecost week.

On Friday afternoon, queues began building shortly before 3pm and quickly stretched beyond three kilometres, according to the mobility service. Delays extended past the Epizen area, nearing the River, with traffic slowing to a crawl or halting entirely at times. The border opened both lanes, but congestion persisted until after the Farga de Moles customs point.

The following morning, Saturday, similar bottlenecks re-emerged on the hispano-Andorran frontier. Queues reached the Epizen stretch again, as Spanish authorities had not yet approved use of a second downhill lane despite requests from Andorra's mobility service. Officials noted that opening the extra lane would likely clear the jams swiftly.

By Saturday morning at around 10am, delays exceeded one kilometre along the General 1 road, though flow was somewhat smoother than the previous day. One of the two outbound lanes remained closed at the customs post, with queues ending after Farga de Moles.

The disruptions stem from families—particularly those linked to public administration, civil service, and liberal professions—heading to holiday destinations or second homes. The long three-day weekend coincides with school closures running through the following week. Mobility officials anticipate fluctuating but generally slow outbound traffic, especially toward Spain.
