Andorra Police Launch Month-Long Pedestrian Safety Campaign

Andorra la Vella police launched a month-long campaign today to prevent pedestrian collisions through checks on vehicles and walkers in urban and interurban areas.

The safety drive, announced yesterday, runs throughout August and targets infractions linked to pedestrian movement. Officers highlighted that most collisions they attend occur at crosswalks, though some result from walkers' own imprudence. The effort will monitor drivers of all vehicles—including bicycles and personal mobility devices—for reducing speed at crossings, yielding priority to pedestrians, and avoiding distractions such as mobile phone use.

Walkers face checks to ensure they use designated crossings, verify vehicles have stopped before crossing—particularly turning ones—and avoid rushing or phone use. On interurban roads lacking sidewalks, pedestrians must keep to the left road edge facing oncoming traffic, wear reflective or luminous gear in low visibility, and proceed single file in groups. Police reiterated the ban on crossing roundabouts within the carriageway, noting impacts can occur in seconds with serious consequences.

The checks align with the first half of August's drive against drink- and drug-driving. No details have emerged on specific sites or officer numbers.
