David Forné, Andorra's Secretary of State for Energy Transition, Transport and Mobility, has announced that a new traffic light on Carrer de la Unió in Andorra la Vella will begin operating today or tomorrow.
The installation forms part of recent reforms to the street aimed at improving traffic flow. Forné defended the changes amid criticism over occasional congestion between Dama de Gel and kilometre zero, particularly during events like the Festa Major d'Escaldes or road closures on Carrer de na Maria Pla and Carrer de l'Hospital. He cautioned against drawing conclusions from isolated incidents, stressing that broader data shows positive results.
Traffic volumes dropped 21% in May and 26% in June, according to figures cited by Forné. He described the street as now "more orderly, safer and smoother" compared to before, with both the government and Andorra la Vella council expressing satisfaction with its performance.
Forné acknowledged that any road modification sparks divided opinions, joking that in Andorra, "a traffic light change can sometimes become a national debate." Officials plan to monitor data over the coming months before considering further adjustments, with at least several months needed for a full assessment.
The secretary reiterated that both the executive and the local council remain "fully satisfied" with the outcomes so far.
