David Forné, Andorra's Secretary of State for Energy Transition, Transport and Mobility, and Sílvia Paneque, Catalonia's councillor for Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, met on Saturday in Esterri d'Àneu to advance shared projects on Pyrenean mobility and connectivity.
The bilateral discussions, held during the 13th Excellence Days under the theme "Pyrenees in Network: Mobility and Connectivity", focused on key initiatives including developments at Andorra-la Seu Airport and the Tramvalira project. Officials reviewed progress to position the airport as a strategic hub for the region and explored ways to build a more integrated communications network suited to mountain areas.
A central topic was Tramvalira, a collaborative Andorra-Catalonia effort funded by the European POCTEFA programme. The meeting tracked the feasibility study for a tram connection between La Seu d'Urgell and Andorra, which Forné described as vital for boosting the economy and accessibility in Andorra and Alt Urgell. He stressed its role in addressing connectivity challenges and offering a public transport alternative for residents, cross-border workers, students and visitors.
Both sides pledged to maintain close institutional coordination on infrastructure and transport, agreeing on the need for joint action to meet mountain mobility demands and promote territorial cohesion.
The talks aligned with the event's sessions on transport issues in upland areas, where Forné presented Andorra's push for sustainable mobility. Andorra's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Imma Tor, closed the event, calling for enhanced cooperation across territories and underscoring the importance of improved physical and digital connectivity for Pyrenean competitiveness and sustainable growth.
