Andorra's FEDA Plans €187.5M Grid and Renewables Investment 2026-2030

Andorra's electricity provider FEDA outlines a €187.5 million investment plan through 2030 to strengthen its grid, boost renewable energy like the Pic del Maià wind farm, and meet rising electrification demands while cutting emissions.

Key Points

  • FEDA to spend €187.5M from 2026-2030, peaking at €64.93M in 2026 for grid upgrades and renewables.
  • €69.8M allocated to grid reinforcement, including new 225 kV Spain interconnection and station upgrades.
  • €25.8M for Pic del Maià wind farm starting 2026; additional €17.3M for renewables from 2028.
  • Investments support energy security, decarbonisation, district heating expansions, and digital upgrades.

Forces Elèctriques d’Andorra (FEDA) will invest €187.5 million from 2026 to 2030 to bolster the electricity grid, expand domestic renewable production, and prepare for higher demand driven by electrification.

The plan, detailed in the company's latest annual report, concentrates most spending in the first three years, with €64.93 million slated for 2026—the highest annual figure and nearly four times the group's €16.4 million total investments in 2025, which marked a 45% rise from €11.28 million in 2024. Outlays then ease to €38.4 million in 2027, €36.94 million in 2028, €32.61 million in 2029, and €14.64 million in 2030. Officials note the later drop reflects projects still under definition, not a slowdown.

Electricity operations dominate, claiming 87% of funds, with electricity business alone budgeting €46.72 million in 2026 for transmission, distribution, and generation. Grid reinforcement gets €69.8 million through 2031, featuring a new 225 kV interconnection line to Spain, a transformer station to link it to Andorra's network, and upgrades to existing stations for greater capacity. This follows 2025 spending of €3.17 million on transmission and €2.61 million on distribution.

Renewables take centre stage with the Pic del Maià wind farm, due to start development in 2026 at €25.8 million. From 2028, €17.3 million targets further unspecified renewable projects to lift local output and cut imports.

District heating and cooling networks, which took €7.48 million in 2025 (45% of that year's total), will extend in Soldeu via a biomass boiler, progress in Andorra la Vella, connect to Escaldes-Engordany, and grow the cooling system there. These steps aim to lower emissions, diversify sources, and smooth peak loads.

Digital upgrades claim €7.3 million for IT renewal, including SAP S/4HANA migration, GIS updates, fibre optics, remote controls, cybersecurity, and tech infrastructure. CTRASA receives €15.46 million for plant maintenance, equipment renewal, and efficiency gains; FEDA Ecoterm 4% of the total; and FEDA Solucions €651,000, or 1%, for mobility and efficiency initiatives.

FEDA presents the cycle as vital for energy security, decarbonisation, and reliable supply amid expanding needs.
