FIS Confirms Soldeu to Host Women's World Cup Giant Slalom and Slalom in 2027

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has confirmed that Soldeu will host women's World Cup alpine skiing events next season, marking the seventh time Andorra has secured such races.

During its spring meetings this week in Portorož, Slovenia, the FIS finalised calendars for major circuits, including the World Cup. The Avet piste in Grandvalira's Soldeu sector will stage a giant slalom on Saturday, 6 March 2027, followed by a slalom on Sunday, 7 March 2027. These technical disciplines will bring top athletes back to the Principality, potentially including figures like Mikaela Shiffrin, who skipped this season's speed events at El Tarter.

Initial plans had called for men's technical races, but Andorra was absent from the FIS provisional calendar released in January. Organisers maintained confidence in a return, and the final schedule now confirms women's events for the second consecutive year and third time in four years.

David Hidalgo, general director of the organising committee, described the achievement as evidence of Soldeu and Andorra's status as a near-permanent World Cup venue. He credited years of effort that have earned respect from athletes, coaches, media, and spectators, placing the resort among the highest-rated stops on a competitive circuit. The commitment reflects skiing's role as the national sport, Hidalgo added.

Carles Visa, manager of the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE), welcomed the news despite the early uncertainty. He called it a key opportunity for national competitors to advance, highlighting slalom skier Carla Mijares—who this season completed the full World Cup circuit and posted an 18th-place finish in Semmering, Austria—as a prime candidate. Visa also noted potential giant slalom entries from Íria Medina or Clàudia Garcia, urging continued work toward top-level challenges.

Previous World Cup visits to Andorra occurred in 2012, 2016, 2019, 2023, 2024, and 2026, with Avet hosting five times, including the 2019 and 2023 finals.

Separately, the FIS approved dates for the Trofeu Borrufa youth event (under-14 and under-16), set for 18-21 January 2027 at Ordino Arcalís—one week earlier than usual. The competition, now in its 35th edition, drew nearly 250 skiers from around 30 countries this year.
