BC MoraBanc Andorra has secured head coach Žan Tabak's future with a two-year contract extension through June 2028, a decision confirmed following Jordi Ardèvol's official presentation as the club's new sporting director on Wednesday.
The renewal, announced ahead of Ardèvol's event at the club's headquarters, underscores Tabak's pivotal role in last season's turnaround. The 55-year-old Croat replaced Joan Plaza in matchday 18 last January, when Andorra sat second-from-bottom in Liga Endesa with just four wins from 17 games. Under his guidance, the team claimed six victories in the remaining 17 fixtures, clinching survival on the final day as rivals Casademont Zaragoza and Dreamland Gran Canaria stumbled—the latter dropping to Primera FEB.
President Gorka Aixàs described Ardèvol's appointment, succeeding Francesc Solana after 16 years, as one of the club's most significant changes. He emphasized rebuilding a distinct identity for a team that has long competed beyond its budget. Ardèvol, who spent a decade scouting for NBA sides including the Pelicans and Clippers after roles at Baxi Manresa and FC Barcelona's youth setup, reviewed Tabak's performance and gathered input before endorsing the extension. "Zan is the ideal person to understand what the club and country want," he said, stressing the need for full alignment between coaching staff and management to define the team's character.
Tabak voiced his satisfaction with the deal, stating he felt "very happy and honored" to continue for two more seasons. He approaches the next phase with "enthusiasm, ambition, and feet on the ground," aiming to "keep growing as a competitive unit."
During Wednesday's presentation, Ardèvol outlined plans for a more physical and athletic squad, targeting ambitious players keen to develop in Andorra. He envisions a balanced roster—mixing league veterans, newcomers, youth prospects, and experienced players—initially around 12 senior spots plus academy-linked talent like Aaron Ganal, though market conditions will shape the final lineup. Progress will come gradually, he noted, prioritizing daily improvement over rushed European qualification, which he views as a long-term club goal rather than short-term pressure.
Ardèvol highlighted challenges from U.S. college basketball's financial draw, which has lured talents like Kostas Kostadinov, calling direct competition "absurd." He praised the fans' loyalty through a tough campaign and the national support as key attractions. Current contracted players include Shannon Evans II, Rafa Luz, Chumi Ortega, Kyle Kuric, Stan Okoye, Yves Pons, Rubén Guerrero, and Artem Pustovyi, some with exit options. Youth quotas remain a priority, with formation players essential for roster planning.
No financial terms were disclosed.
