Gael Alonso undergoes successful operation for tibial malleolus fracture sustained in training, missing most of the season's first half

FC Andorra centre-back Gael Alonso will be sidelined for four to five months following successful surgery on Friday for a tibial malleolus fracture he suffered during a training session last week.

The procedure took place as planned in the afternoon, and the defender has begun his rehabilitation under the club's medical staff supervision. Recovery timelines point to a return in late December or early January 2027, ruling him out for nearly the entire first half of the campaign in Spain's Segunda División.

Alonso, a key player last season in the club's return to the second tier, featured in 38 matches, scored two goals and picked up 11 yellow cards. He established himself as one of the competition's breakout central defenders during his professional debut.

The injury represents a major blow for coach Carles Manso's side. Alonso was spotted on crutches and wearing an orthopedic boot at the Estadi Comunal on Thursday during FC Andorra's match against Europa.

To fill the gap, the club announced the signing of Argentine centre-back Lautaro Spatz on Sunday. The 24-year-old from Buenos Aires has agreed to a two-year deal with an optional third season, arriving from Villarreal's reserves for a modest fee plus bonuses. Spatz, who trained with Villarreal during preseason, has prior experience with Cádiz's first team, as well as stints at Montevideo City Torque, Antequera and Algeciras. He joins the squad immediately.
