Andorran Skier Irineu Esteve Advances in POTS Recovery

The cross-country skier shows positive progress after spring diagnosis, with plans to gradually intensify training under supervision while focusing on full health restoration.

Key Points

  • Irineu Esteve diagnosed with POTS in spring, causing dizziness and fatigue, ended season early.
  • Recent tests confirm no other issues; tapering medication and planning gradual training increases.
  • Low-intensity sessions ongoing under monitoring by FAE coaches and doctors.
  • Priority on full recovery; no set timeline for competitive return.

Andorran cross-country skier Irineu Esteve is making positive strides in his recovery from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), an autonomic nervous system disorder that causes dizziness and extreme fatigue.

Detected this spring following several medical tests, the condition forced Esteve to halt training and end his season early. Since then, his team has focused on stabilizing his health and ruling out other issues. Recent evaluations have confirmed no additional complications, enabling him to start tapering medication and plan gradual increases in training volume over the coming weeks.

All decisions on progression involve Esteve, his coaches from the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE), and doctors. He continues low-intensity sessions under constant monitoring, with workloads and paces remaining below preseason norms. No timeline exists for a competitive return, as the priority stays on complete recovery.

The syndrome previously impacted NBA player Kristaps Porziņģis, who in 2025 attributed his struggles to a respiratory virus that hindered elite performance.
