Andorran figure skater Raül García Shibinskiy has become the first from the country to qualify for the World Junior Figure Skating Championships, finishing 17th at the Junior Grand Prix in Xi’an, China.
The Federació Andorrana d’Esports de Gel (FAEG) athlete, representing Andorra Club Gel, achieved a total score of 160.43 points, with a technical score of 82.01 that met the minimum entry standard for the event in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 24 to 28 February 2027.
“I’m very satisfied with the competition in Xi’an and super happy to have achieved the World Championships goal for Andorra,” García said after his performance, which marks a historic milestone not just for him but for Andorran ice skating seeking greater international visibility.
Andrea Pazos Guerra, also from FAEG, competed in the same event and placed 32nd with 65.87 points. Both skaters were supported by coach Eric de Mena, the club’s general manager, gaining valuable exposure alongside top junior talents and coaches.
The result sets up further opportunities, including the next Junior Grand Prix in Batumi, Georgia. García has additionally been selected for the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity programme, backed by the Andorran Olympic Committee and government sports bodies. He is continuing intensive training in Moscow after a period in Italy.
