Drunk Driver Detained After 4-Car Crash Near Prat Salit in Andorra la Vella

Police in Andorra have detained the driver responsible for a multiple-vehicle collision near the Prat Salit roundabout in Andorra la Vella on Friday afternoon, after he tested positive for alcohol with a blood level exceeding 2 grams per litre.

The crash occurred at 16:22 on Avinguda Salou, at the height of the Prat Salit roundabout close to the Viena establishment. It involved four Andorran-registered cars, leading to a section of the CG-1 being closed in both directions for several hours. This caused significant traffic disruptions across central Andorra, including delays on Avinguda Salou, the Carretera de l’Obac, Avinguda Riberaygua, and Avinguda de les Nacions Unides. Circulation was restored by around 18:00.

Investigations identified a manoeuvre by the detained driver's vehicle as the trigger for the chain reaction collision. He sustained no injuries, unlike occupants of the other cars. Four people were hurt—all residents with minor injuries including blows, whiplash, bruises, and discomfort. They received on-site treatment before hospital transfer and were discharged later that afternoon and evening. The injured included a 27-year-old male driver, sole occupant of his car; a 36-year-old female driver, sole occupant of hers; and two women aged 45 and 33, driver and passenger in another vehicle.

All four drivers—all residents—underwent breathalyser tests. Only the suspect, a young Andorran resident, registered positive at over 2g/l. He faces charges of a crime against collective safety and likely additional counts related to physical integrity due to the injuries caused.

Emergency services responded extensively: firefighters deployed four units, including two ambulances, an extrication truck, and a support vehicle. An initial alert for a trapped person proved unnecessary, as only a door was blocked.

Police continue investigating the exact circumstances. The Prat Salit area is known as a traffic blackspot due to high volume.
