Andorra Approves Tender for Final CG-3 Widening Phase to La Massana

The Council of Ministers greenlit the tender for a key upgrade on the CG-3, adding a second uphill lane over 90 metres to reduce congestion from Andorra la Vella traffic merging at Dos Valires tunnel.

Key Points

  • Targets 90-metre stretch near Dos Valires tunnel with new masonry wall.
  • Adds second uphill lane, creating four lanes total to ease afternoon congestion.
  • Includes riverside walkway for safe pedestrian access.
  • Completes full CG-3 expansion from tunnels to La Massana by December.

The Andorran Council of Ministers has approved the tender for the third and final phase of widening the CG-3 road, creating a second uphill lane toward La Massana by December.

The project targets a 90-metre stretch between the Lisbon Bridge exit at the west end of the Dos Valires tunnel and the Anyós secondary road roundabout. Workers will build a new masonry wall to widen the road by three to four metres, establishing a fourth lane overall and extending the second uphill lane for traffic to La Massana and Ordino.

Territory and Urban Planning Minister Raül Ferré proposed the measure, which cleared the final hurdle after an agreement with the last affected landowner. The upgrade aims to ease daily congestion, especially in the afternoons when traffic from Andorra la Vella and Encamp via the Dos Valires tunnel merges into one uphill lane.

The new lane will reach the Serra de l'Honor roundabout, where vehicles can divert to Ordino on a new bypass or proceed to La Massana along the existing CG-3. Separate works on the right-hand verge between the Anyós and Sispony secondary roads are already in progress to extend the dual uphill lanes to the roundabout while retaining the Anyós junction.

The initiative will also add a riverside walkway connected to the ral path, enabling safe pedestrian access without crossing the CG-3.

Once complete, the project will finish the full CG-3 expansion from the tunnels to La Massana, supporting the revised layout at Serra de l'Honor.
