The RN320 road near L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre will close completely to traffic in both directions from June 1 to October 29 for safety and finishing works, French authorities have announced.
The closure affects the stretch between the northern exit of the Pimorent tunnel and the junction with the RN22, a key route from France to Pas de la Casa. Work will complete the 300-metre H2 anti-avalanche gallery, opened in November 2024 and jointly funded by Andorra and France to shield vehicles from mountain hazards on this vital link. Crews will also repair the nearby bridge over the Ariège River.
Traffic will reroute via the RN22, known locally as the "ruta de les couleuvres". On the night of June 1-2, the RN320 will close further to the Croisade junction to set up the diversion. That evening, drivers heading to Pas de la Casa must use the Pimorent tunnel, via Porté-Puymorens, then join the RN22.
The gallery entered service before winter to ensure passage during peak weather risks, but technical finishing and detailing remain. The southwest France regional roads directorate is combining the bridge repairs with the closure to minimise future disruptions on the strategic corridor.
The works will restrict summer and early autumn travel, with full reopening expected by late October. Authorities have not detailed exact impacts on peak tourist flows to Andorra's border parish.
